Job Description

About Tutor

We believe general-purpose, generally-intelligent robots will be built in our lifetimes. Robots will work in our factories, move our goods, walk on our streets and eventually be in our homes. To build that future, research and deployment must work in lockstep: real-world operation must make the technology better, and better technology must make deployment easier. We're looking for the thinkers, builders, and researchers who want to be part of that loop.

As an AI robotics company that deploys its inventions directly into the facilities that need them, on state-of-the-art hardware, every robot we build at Tutor has a direct impact on the global, physical economy.

Culture

We believe something truly special happens when talented, motivated people work together; at Tutor, every member of our team is empowered to have real impact in everything they do. We're characterized by both technical excellence and next-level collaboration and respect.

The Role

Most test jobs hand you a pass/fail checklist and a bin for rejects. This one is the opposite. You'll take a robot fresh off the assembly line, bring it to life, and own it until it's verified, documented, and ready to ship. When it doesn't behave, and some won't, you'll work out why, prove it, fix it, and make sure it stays fixed.

You'll work on our autonomous palletizing robot, which combines a collaborative robot arm, a battery-powered mobile base, vacuum end-of-arm tooling, sensors, and safety systems. You'll partner with our Production Engineers (Test & QA), who own the test process, while you run bring-up and test at rate.

We are motivated by atoms not electrons. The robots you release ship to real warehouses across the country, where every hidden fault becomes a field ticket. You are the last set of hands before the customer.

What you'll own

  • Receiving robots from the line, inspecting build readiness and wiring workmanship, and performing safe initial power-up
  • Loading and verifying software, firmware, calibrations, and configurations using our provisioning tools and procedures
  • Subsystem bring-up: DC power and battery system, CAN communications, robot arm and controller, mobile base and drives, sensors, vacuum system, and safety circuits
  • Running functional and final acceptance testing, including multi-hour continuous runs and log review for abnormal behavior
  • Triage across electrical, mechanical, software, networking, and configuration failures
  • Reproducing problems, isolating root cause with evidence, and performing repairs within approved procedures
  • Verifying every repair with targeted checks and retesting
  • Driving each robot's issues to closure, and escalating to Production Engineering with clear evidence when needed
  • Recording failures, repairs, configurations, and test results in ION and our issue-tracking systems
  • Preparing robots for shipment: final checks, battery state of charge, arm stowing, and complete documentation before release
  • Coaching manufacturing technicians on bring-up and helping build troubleshooting guides
  • Feeding recurring failures back to Production Engineering so they are fixed at the source
  • Following electrical safety, ESD, lithium battery handling, and equipment isolation procedures

How you'll be measured

More robots pass final acceptance testing the first time, fewer issues show up when robots arrive at customers, repeat failures and unnecessary part swaps go down, and Engineering gets clear evidence, not guesses, when escalation is needed.

Requirements

  • Proven independent troubleshooting of complete robots, industrial automation equipment, or comparably complex electromechanical systems
  • Experience owning bring-up and resolving failures, beyond assembly or routine pass/fail testing
  • Fluency reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and assembly drawings
  • Confident use of a multimeter to diagnose power, wiring, and signal problems
  • A sharp eye for wiring workmanship: crimps, ferrules, connector pins, strain relief, and cable routing
  • Working knowledge of DC power systems, motors, actuators, sensors, and connectors
  • Comfort with the Linux command line, IP networking, software installs, configuration checks, and log analysis
  • A methodical approach: form a hypothesis, test it, isolate the cause, verify the repair
  • Clear documentation and communication, including knowing the difference between a confirmed cause and a suspected one
  • Ability to prioritize production blockers, work independently, and escalate at the right time
  • Flexibility to work extended hours during production pushes and ship deadlines

Nice to haves (zero or more)

  • 5+ years of relevant hands-on experience
  • Oscilloscope and CAN bus diagnostic tools
  • Experience with collaborative robot arms, mobile robots, or battery-powered equipment
  • IPC/WHMA-A-620 or similar wiring workmanship training
  • Python or shell scripting for diagnostics and test execution
  • Technical training, an associate degree, or equivalent practical experience
